EMR is imagined as a calm sanctuary devoted to tactile and sonic exploration.  It is about discovery and collaborative musical creation. We imagine it deep in playa. The structure, an extension of the landscape, will consist of curves of white canvas and iron spiraling up from the ground.  The inner walls will be comprised of amplified objects, welded from scrap metal and fitted with resonators and strings.  Three free-standing sounding sculptures will occupy the center.  These will be musical instruments, but novel ones--no one is an expert or a virtuoso, but everyone is invited to engage in the same naive and playful experimentation.

In EMR, participants will create a soundscape by playing the amplified sculptures. It will combine isolated events into a slowly evolving rhythmic texture, “pinging” sounds through different speakers throughout the installation.  A console with controls for the audio processing will allow individuals in the center of the spirals to shape and sculpt the gestures of those around them.  Whether the result of simply brushing up against an amplified sculpture or consciously plucking specific strings, every sound will become part of the undulating texture.  There will be no performers and no audience, but a community of explorers making their own sound world.
